YouTube is an experiment

Here's how to get the results.

1% Better + Every time = Success

One of the things that people will often tell you on YouTube is that you need consistency - and while that’s true, I would add that you need to consistently get better. It doesn’t have to be huge amounts. You can do it with just 1% changes.

This is the story of EldenRingBattle

A gaming YouTuber who started out with a concept, then - over time - gained traction, and views.

Look at the thumbnail/Title -

Nothing here is spectacular to me, but they noticed a .8% uptick in views.

The differences here are so subtle, that it took me a while to notice. But look >

It’s still a screenshot (not what I would advise) but a BETTER screenshot. That’s 1%.

The title contains a cool emoji. 1%

The rest is largely the same. And it’s a 51k view difference. Let’s take a look at what comes next. . .

Same format of video - practically the same style of title. But look at the detail.

It’s still a screenshot! - but the screenshot is now color graded, and edited - 1%

There’s some captivating text now - 1%

and now it’s getting 73k views.

The formula is simple 1% better + every time = success.

Practice:

When I was just starting out, I built a 1% tracker. What was I going to do in the next video to make it just 1% better? Was I going to spend 10 more minutes on the thumbnail, maybe I was going to add cool subtitle animations, maybe I was going to really focus on the audio quality. Over time my 1% tracker started getting filled out, and you could barely tell the difference between my first video and my latest.

Now it’s time to make your own 1% tracker. Put 100 things on there. - sound quality, animations, better cuts, color grading on the thumbnail, research, lighting. Whatever it is.
If you’re having trouble thinking of how your videos could be 1% better, email me with your channel handle, and I’ll point you in the right direction.

Creator’s Killing it.

You’re a skeptic. You want more proof that people are succeeding NOW in gaming on YouTube. Alright, twist my arm. Here ya go.

Key Takeaways

Niche: Once again I’d like to remind, for the people in the back, you don’t need to stick to one game. You can do a few different things/games/subniches, but they have to be linked by SOMETHING - in this case it’s two things 1) Reviews of 2) somewhat older games

Known to Unknown: Notice how the one that actually has the worst views (33k is still impressive) is the one that doesn’t hinge on an already known game. People don’t know what Atrox is, but they DO know what StarCraft is, so what does your audience already know, and how can you link it?

Branding: I will be the first to say, I don’t love the side branding that this creator puts on these videos. I think the thumbnails would be cleaner without the branding HOWEVER - if you absolutely MUST brand because you really like the way it looks, do it like this, out of the way, on the right side where it doesn’t get much focus, and blended enough to not draw attention to itself.

Creator Opportunity

“Weaponize your Nostalgia”

As time passes, there will always be a “new” nostalgia. Today it’s for the Xbox360, tomorrow it will be fore the Xbox One. The point is this:

In the ever-growing landscape of AI we will yearn for things that have a “human touch” to them. With this type of content, you won’t need the hyper edits, you won’t need perfection, you’ll need “a vibe” as this newer generation puts it.

Vibe is just as important as niche - I know I harp a lot on niche here, but your vibe is just as important. Vibe is a part of your niche. If you do hyper-edited ADHD style videos, on something like StarCraft, or let’s say Halo 3, chances are you aren’t going to get very far. Because your audience isn’t as young as they used to be. Obviously if you’re creating for brand new games you might need to have that younger vibe (unless old gamer plays new games is the thing you’re going for)

Would you do me a favor? If you know a gamer, or someone who likes to game, and is a bit lost on YouTube would you send them this? Thanks in advance!
